Whether you are moving into, within, or out of the borough it’s important you let us know so we can set up or update your Council Tax bill. You can tell us about your change of address or tenancy online using the forms below.
If you are either moving to a new address within or out of Bedford Borough, please have your most recent Council Tax bill to hand before filling out the online form. Your Council Tax account reference number will be needed to complete the online forms.
You can find it in the top right hand corner of your bill, it is made up of ten numbers and starts with 22.
If you are moving into Bedford Borough or you are paying Council Tax for the first time, you won’t yet have a Council Tax account reference number with us. Please go straight to the ‘I am moving into the borough/I am paying Council Tax for the first time’ form below.

Choosing the correct reporting option
It’s important that you choose the right reporting option so we can make sure you receive the correct Council Tax bill for your new address or the correct closing bill if you are moving out. Please read each section carefully to make sure you choose the right option for you.
Moving into the borough / paying Council Tax for the first time
Please use this option if you are new to the borough or will be paying Council Tax for the first time, for example if you are moving out of your family home. You should also use this option if you have purchased a second property within the borough.
Please make sure you have the following information to hand before you complete the online form:
- Details of all the adults aged 18 years old or over who will be living at the property with you, including students.
- At least one telephone number so we can contact you if we need to.
If you are renting you will need to tell us your tenancy start date, the date you are moving in and whether the property is furnished or unfurnished.
If you are buying your property, you will need to tell us whether it is freehold or leasehold, your completion date and the date you moved in / plan to move in. You will also need to provide contact details for either your purchaser or their solicitor.
I am moving into the borough / I am paying Council Tax for the first time
Don't forget, if you are moving into the borough, you will need to register to vote.
Moving within the borough
Please use this option if you live within Bedford Borough, are already registered for Council Tax and are moving to a different property.
Please make sure you have the following information to hand before you complete the online form:
- Your last Council Tax bill (if you have one) – please make sure you use the details precisely as they appear on your bill when you complete the online form.
- Details of all the adults aged 18 years old or over who will be living at the property with you, including students.
- At least one telephone number so we can contact you if we need to.
If you are renting you will need to tell us your tenancy start date, the date you are moving in and whether the property is furnished or unfurnished.
If you are buying your property, you will need to tell us whether it is freehold or leasehold, your completion date and the date you moved in / plan to move in. You will also need to provide contact details for either your purchaser or their solicitor.
I am moving within the borough
Don't forget, you will need to register to vote at your new address.
Moving out of the borough
Please use this option if:
- you are moving out of Bedford Borough to an address in a different Council area
- you are moving out of a property in the borough to live with friends or family within Bedford Borough
- you are moving to a residential care home
- you have sold / are in the process of selling a second property in Bedford Borough
Please tell us you are moving out of Bedford Borough about a month before you move. Once you have told us you are moving out, you should receive your closing Council Tax bill within 10 working days.
Please make sure you have the following information to hand before you complete the online form:
- Your last Council Tax bill – please make sure you use the details precisely as they appear on your bill when you complete the online form.
- Your forwarding address.
- Contact details for the new owner / tenant (if you have them).
I am moving out of the borough
Second properties
Please use this option if you have purchased or become responsible for a second property in Bedford Borough. This could be a second home that is furnished but is not used as a main residence, or job-related and provided for reasons of your employment. Select the "I am moving into the borough" option.
Please make sure you have the following information to hand before you complete the online form:
- Details of all the adults aged 18 years old or over who will be living at the property with you, including students.
- At least one contact telephone number.
If you are renting you will need to tell us your tenancy start date, the date you are moving in and whether the property is furnished or unfurnished.
If you are buying your property, you will need to tell us whether it is freehold or leasehold, your completion date and the date you moved in / plan to move in.
I have purchased / become responsible for a second property in the borough
