Steps to fostering

The first step is to have an informal chat over the phone, where we will ask some questions and take your details.

Initial home visit

We arrange a visit to your home from one of our social workers. This is a chance for them to discuss fostering in more detail, and answer any questions you might have.

Application form

You will need to complete a short application form to start the assessment process.

Assessment

This will then progress onto a full assessment of you and your family, which normally lasts approximately six months. We will carry out some required statutory checks including employer and reference checks. Within this time, you will have to attend Skills to Foster training, which will help to prepare you for the role of fostering.

Fostering Panel

Once the assessment is complete, your application will be presented to the Fostering Panel, where recommendations will be made for your approval as a foster carer.

Approval

Following the Fostering Panel recommendations and approval by our Agency Decision Maker, you will be able to begin fostering.
