Food waste collection explained

What do we mean by food waste?

Food waste includes:

  • expired products - products that have exceeded their sell-by date and therefore cannot be consumed.
  • leftovers - leftovers from preparation and consumption of food. It also includes leftover food consumed on your premises by staff.
  • by-product food waste - any food by-products created as part of your business This more relevant for butchery and bakery businesses.

Please ensure all food waste is removed from its packaging before placing it in the bin.

Why recycling food waste is good for your business

Benefits to your business include:

  • Reduce the environmental impact of your business – food waste in landfill creates methane, a harmful greenhouse gas which is 25 times stronger than CO2. In the hospitality and food sector, almost one million tonnes of food waste is thrown away each year.
  • Reduced general waste disposal costs – separating food will allow you to have a smaller general waste bin or fewer general waste collections.
  • Convenience – we can collect your food waste multiple times per week.

How your food waste will be disposed of

All the food waste we collect will go to an anaerobic digestion plant operated by BioGen near Rushden. The anaerobic digestion process turns food waste into biogas, a renewable fuel used to generate electricity.

Anaerobic digestion is a process in which bacteria break down organic matter, such as food waste, without oxygen. These bacteria convert organic wastes into biogas which rises to the top of a digester. This consists mainly of methane and CO2. The solid matter left behind falls to the bottom of the digestion chamber. This nutrient-rich residue can be used as an organic fertiliser.

The extracted biogas is used to generate renewable electricity which is exported to the National Grid.
