The return of Bedford River Festival next month means the return of Sports Island and the Water Sports Arena – and we want you to take part!
The free outdoor two-day extravaganza takes place every other year, and returns this summer on the weekend of 18-19 July. And sports fans should make a beeline to the popular Sports Island and the high-adrenaline Water Sports Arena.
Situated next to the Butterfly Bridge on The Embankment, Sports Island is a unique opportunity for people of all ages, abilities and interests to experience a range of sports and activities led by local organisations.
Whether you are trying something new or rediscovering an old sporting favourite; local clubs, organisations and gyms will be on hand to provide information, advice and opportunities to get involved.
Activities include back massages, canoeing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, rugby skills sessions, gymnastics, line dancing, cheerleading demonstrations, squash activities and climbing.
On Saturday, Sports Island stage kicks off with a yoga lesson led by Mo from Better, followed by demonstrations from Bedford Bhangra after lunchtime, and Bedford Kendo Club to round off the day.
On Sunday, visitors can try a mixture of fitness classes, a second yoga session plus demonstrations from Mike’s Line Dancing and Fight Klub.
And there will also be more excitement lined up at the Water Sports Arena.
Situated next to the Butterfly Bridge and Bedford School Boathouse, the Arena will transform the river into a hub of thrilling demonstrations and fun water activities for all ages.
Coordinated by Canoe Trail, expert instructors and passionate paddlers will deliver a safe, engaging and memorable experience for festival-goers of all abilities.
A highlight of the weekend will be the impressive large ramp installation, where skilled paddlers will perform spectacular canoe flips and freestyle tricks, showcasing agility, balance and precision on the water.
Those looking for something a little more adventurous can try out zorbing sessions and lively water obstacle races throughout the weekend.
On Sunday, the excitement continues with a fast-paced Canoe Polo match, where teams will battle it out on the river.
Councillor John Wheeler, Portfolio Holder for Customer Experience (inc. Leisure, Recreation and Culture) said; “Whether you’re an experienced sportsperson or a curious first-timer, Sports Island and the Water Sports Arena will offer something for everyone at this year’s Bedford River Festival.
“This is the perfect chance to try a new sport, reignite your passion for a favourite past time or enjoy as a spectator – this is where you can discover what Bedford has to offer.”
