Bedford Borough Council is thanking residents for their enthusiastic support of the new food waste collection service, which has already seen more than 170 tonnes of food waste collected in just the first two weeks - the equivalent of around 115 family-sized cars.

Councillor Nicola Gribble, Portfolio Holder for Environment, said, “It’s fantastic to see residents embracing the new food waste service. We’ve had some early challenges, but by working together and listening to feedback, we’ve been able to resolve most issues quickly. Reporting bin problems online is the best way to keep this progress going - it gets information to our teams faster and ensures Customer Services are free to help those who really need extra support.”

Each type of bin is collected by a different vehicle, which means bins may be emptied at different times between 6am and 5pm on collection day. Missed collections should be reported within two working days. To check collection days or report a missed collection, visit www.bedford.gov.uk/bins, enter your postcode and select your address. If your address is not recognised or your calendar does not appear, please contact Customer Services who can ask for this to be resolved.

Using the online form sends the request straight to the right team and gives a reference number so residents can follow up later if they need to. Reporting online also helps the Council respond faster overall, reducing waiting times and freeing up phone lines for residents who cannot access the internet.

If a bin has been damaged, is missing, or a food waste bin has not yet been delivered, residents can request a replacement online at www.bedford.gov.uk/RequestBins. For flats where delivery teams have been unable to gain access, residents can also report this in the same way, and the team will make contact to arrange a suitable delivery time.

The Council’s website includes translation and audio tools to make reporting easier for everyone. On smartphones or tablets, open the menu in the top-right corner. On computers or laptops, click the orange icon at the bottom left to translate the page or listen to it being read aloud.
