Bedford Borough Council is optimising bin collection routes for recycling, household, garden and food waste with effect from Monday, 30 March 2026. This will lead to a change of collection day for some homes. This marks the first major overhaul of waste collection routes and schedules since the 2016 switch to an alternate-week system. The final collections of the current routes for each type of bin will be made 16-27 March.

Under the updated plan, most households in Bedford Borough will see no change to their collection day. Around 20% of homes will have a new collection day and will be notified by post of this change. In most cases, these residents will receive their next bin collection sooner than normal during the transition. A small number of addresses may, unavoidably, see a gap longer than two weeks between their collections. The council will be arranging an extra collection of either the household waste or the garden waste and recycling on Saturday 28 March for those affected. Residents impacted can check which bin will be collected on the Saturday at www.bedford.gov.uk/bins from Wednesday 18 March.

These route changes are not driven by the new food waste service but are timed to integrate it more smoothly. Starting Monday 30 March 2026, Bedford Borough will introduce weekly food waste collections for all homes, including flats. Under the new scheme, every household will have food scraps collected each week, on the same day as its fortnightly black bin or orange/green-lidded wheelie bin collection.

The Council stresses that the route overhaul is a response to recent operational challenges. Over the summer, a fire at the Elstow Waste Transfer Station put that facility out of action, forcing collection vehicles to travel further for disposal. This has increased travel distances, fuel costs and caused inconsistency in service. Additionally, new housing developments in Bedford Borough over the last ten years have made some collection routes much larger and unbalanced than others. By redrawing the rounds now, the Council aims to improve efficiency, reliability, and reduce running costs going forward.

The online bin collection calendar will be updated from midday, Monday,16 March at www.bedford.gov.uk/bins. Households can use this calendar to see their next two weeks of collections and so, any changes to their collections will show by the end of the month. Not everyone feels confident doing things digitally, and The Bedford Borough Hub on Horne Lane, offers free computer and Wi‑Fi access, along with friendly help to use Council services online. Open Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri 9am–5pm and Wed 10am–5pm.

Councillor Nicola Gribble, Portfolio Holder for Environment, said, “We apologise for any short-term disruption to your bin collections and are working tirelessly to minimise the impact. These revised routes will deliver a more efficient and reliable service for the Borough. While the changes may take some getting used to, they will help ensure dependable collections and help the Council save money in future.”

Bedford Borough Council thanks residents for their patience and understanding during this transition.
