A groundbreaking approach to fostering has taken another huge step in Bedford Borough, with the launch of the third Mockingbird Constellation.
Mockingbird was introduced to the Borough last year. It provides foster families with an enhanced support network by replicating the structure of an extended family.
To celebrate, a special event was held bringing together foster carers, children and members of the fostering team. The event celebrated the expansion of the Mockingbird programme and highlighted the success it has achieved so far.
Mockingbird was developed by The Fostering Network, designed to create a strong support network for foster carers, children, and young people. At the heart of each constellation is a Hub Home Carer, who provides practical and emotional support, sleepovers and day care, and guidance to a group of ‘satellite’ foster families. This model improves stability in placements, reduces stress for carers, and builds a resilient, caring community for children and young people in foster care.
The introduction of Mockingbird in Bedford Borough has been made possible through funding from the Department for Education (DfE).
Councillor Jane Walker, Portfolio Holder for Valuing Families: Children’s Services said; “We have seen the success of Mockingbird with our first two constellations, with 19 families being supported while also supporting each other.
“The Hub Home Carers host monthly coffee mornings for their satellite carers and monthly social activities for the whole Constellation. These can range from picnics in the park and trips out to soft play and a summer BBQ. All the children take part and develop meaningful, lasting relationships, while carers benefit from a community of people who understand and support one another.”
Melanie Field, Manager for Corporate Parenting added; "We have a fantastic community of carers and Mockingbird provides an additional layer of support and structure for them to benefit from.
“I am very proud of our carers, our Fostering Team and everyone who continues to support us in making this vision a reality, to improve the lives of our children, young people and carers in Bedford."
With the success of launching three constellations, Bedford Borough Council looks forward to expanding the Mockingbird programme further, ensuring more foster families, children and young people benefit from this innovative and supportive approach to fostering.
