Get ready to discover the fascinating stories of Bedford. Bedford Borough Council and the Bedford Association of Tour Guides are excited to announce the start of a new season of guided walking tours.
These fun and educational tours are led by expert guides who will take you on a journey through time. Learn about famous figures like John Bunyan, what life was like in Bedford during World War II, and even the secrets of Bedford Castle.
New walks for 2025 include "Plaques & Plinths”, telling the stories behind the blue plaques and monuments in the town, and “Bedford’s South Bank Show”, showcasing the importance of Bedford’s South Bank to the development of the town.
Councillor Sarah Gallagher, Portfolio Holder for Customer Experience, Leisure and Culture, said; "These walking tours are a great way to explore and learn about Bedford’s history. Whether you're curious about the past or just love adventure, these tours are perfect for everyone. Come and join us on this exciting journey through time!"
The tours take place on the first and last Wednesday of each month and every Sunday, except on the Easter and August bank holiday weekends when they take place on Saturday. Each tour costs £4 per person, and it's just £2 for kids over eight years old. You can even book a special tour just for your group!
The walks typically last between an hour and a half to two hours, covering a distance of one to two miles, and must be booked in advance.
For those preferring to explore at their own pace, a complimentary 45-minute self-guided tour of untold stories of Bedford High Street is available, courtesy of The Invisible Folk Walking Tour of Bedford High Street. This tour was developed in partnership with Bedford Borough Council as part of the Historic England High Street Heritage Action Zone project.
