Bedford Borough Council will be carrying out new drainage and highway maintenance works on Paula Radcliffe Way from Monday, 5 January 2026, for approximately 30 days. These essential works are required to maintain effective surface water management, improve road safety, and ensure the long-term integrity of this important part of the highway network. Lane closures will be in place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the duration of the works, and motorists are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and follow all traffic management and signage in place.
The works will take place on Paula Radcliffe Way from the Sainsbury’s roundabout to the Thatched Barn on Bedford Road. Activities will include the replacement of sumpless gullies, clearance of kerb channels, and vegetation clearance at silting basins on the side of Paula Radcliffe Way and associated channels. Warning signage will be in place prior to commencement to ensure visibility and awareness for road users. Access for emergency services will be maintained at all times throughout the works.
A major highway scheme was completed on Paula Radcliffe Way in 2023, and these new works form part of the Council’s ongoing programme of maintenance and improvement to keep key routes safe and resilient. By proactively maintaining the drainage system and highway infrastructure, the Council aims to reduce the risk of surface water issues, support smoother journeys, and protect this strategic corridor for the future.
Councillor Nicola Gribble, Portfolio Holder for Environment at Bedford Borough Council, said, “Keeping our key routes in good condition is vital for safety and for keeping Bedford Borough moving. These new drainage and maintenance works on Paula Radcliffe Way will help manage surface water, protect the road structure, and support safer journeys for all road users. We know roadworks can be frustrating and are very grateful for drivers’ patience and cooperation while this important programme is carried out.”
Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, consider alternative routes where possible, and keep an eye on the Council’s social media channels for any further updates. The Council would like to thank residents, businesses, and all road users in advance for their understanding while these essential works are underway.
