Bedford Borough Council recently launched its first Mockingbird Constellation, a groundbreaking approach to fostering that enhances support for carers and children by replicating the structure of an extended family.
To celebrate, a special event was held at Willington Peace Memorial Hall, bringing together foster carers, children, social workers, and members of the fostering team. The event recognised the dedication of those involved and highlighted the positive impact the Mockingbird model is already having on fostering in Bedford Borough.
Mockingbird is an evidence-based programme developed by The Fostering Network, designed to create a strong support network for foster carers, children, and young people. At the heart of each constellation is a Hub Home Carer, who provides practical and emotional support, respite care, and guidance to a group of ‘satellite’ foster families. This model improves stability in placements, reduces stress for carers, and builds a resilient, caring community for children in foster care.
The introduction of Mockingbird in Bedford Borough is made possible through funding from the Department for Education (DfE).
Councillor Jane Walker, Portfolio Holder for Valuing Families: Children’s Services, praised the initiative, stating: “We are incredibly proud to have launched Bedford Borough’s first Mockingbird Constellation, which is already making a real difference to the lives of our foster families and young people. This model strengthens relationships, builds resilience, and provides an invaluable support network for carers, ensuring that children in our care have the stability and security they deserve.”
Head of Service Samantha Gordon added; "I am very proud of our carers, our Fostering Team and everyone who supported us in making this vision a reality, to improve the lives of our children and carers in Bedford."
With the success of this first constellation, Bedford Borough Council looks forward to expanding the Mockingbird programme further, ensuring more foster families and children benefit from this innovative and supportive approach to fostering.
