Pension Credit

Bedford Borough Council is encouraging residents to see if they are entitled to claim pension credits or a Household Support Grant.

Pension Credit, which could be worth up to £3,900 each year, tops up the pension of people over the State Pension age who have a low income, helping with rent and other housing costs. It can even be claimed if someone has other income, savings or owns their home.

Families, friends and neighbours are also encouraged to reach out to retired family members and friends to enable them to check their eligibility and apply.

Changes have been made to the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment with the payment of up to £300 only available to those on Pension Credit. The last possible date to make a successful backdated claim to receive the Winter Fuel Payment is 21 December 2024.

Residents can apply directly via the UK Government’s website at www.gov.uk/pension-creditor find out more about help with the cost of living at  www.bedford.gov.uk/benefits-and-support/grants-and-funding/help-cost-living

The Council is also offering a £150 Household Support Grant, funded by UK Government, to pensioners who receive Council Tax Support from the Council.  Pensioners who have previously received a grant will receive the payment automatically, other pensioners should check the Council’s website for advice on how to claim the grant or claim Council Tax Support.

Councillor Graeme Coombes, Portfolio Holder for Finance and Corporate Services, said: “It is imperative, especially with winter coming, that our residents realise they may be able to claim Pension Credit.

“This can give people extra money to help with living costs if they are over state pension age and on a low income.”
