Our staff are our greatest asset. We work hard to ensure all our staff feel valued for their unique contributions.

We invest in and encourage ongoing learning, giving our staff personal responsibility for their own growth whilst supporting them to be the best they can be.

Our commitment to workforce development

Induction and new starter welcome sessions

When you join us, you will be welcomed with a structured induction to ensure you have everything you need to start your new role.

We will give you comprehensive information on Council operations and policies and set clear expectations of your role and responsibilities.

We also hold new starter sessions every quarter. These are a great opportunity for new staff to meet colleagues from across the Council.

E-Learning: BBOLT (Bedford Borough Online Learning and Training)

With BBOLT you can access essential online courses as part of your induction as well as a broad range of other courses to support you throughout your career with us.

You can learn at your own pace and at your preferred location.

Wellbeing

Our employees' health and wellbeing is vital to us, which is why we offer an impressive range of resources including:

  • an in-house Occupational Health and Wellbeing Service
  • a Sports Therapy and Exercise Clinic
  • and Employee Assistance Programme offering free, confidential counselling and mental health in the workplace training

Our Employee Wellbeing Champions are trained in mental health and wellbeing. They also run wellbeing events which have previously involved therapies such as meditation and massage.

We are committed to working towards achieving the Healthy Workplace Standards, working in partnership with our Public Health Workplace Team to further improve our staff team’s health and wellbeing.

The Big Conversation

The Big Conversation is an initiative that takes place three times a year.

It is a chance to raise awareness on key topics, encouraging collaboration and reflection across the Council and to drive positive change.

Career Progression Schemes

We currently have three formal Career Progression Schemes:

  • a scheme for social workers that links professional competence with levels of pay
  • a scheme in engineering where apprenticeships are used to help with career advancement
  • a scheme for occupation therapists

Bedford Leaders

Bedford Leaders is a quarterly collaboration and development session for senior managers. It's an opportunity to discuss critical topics and collaborate on strategies that impact the whole organisation. It also offers a space for managers to share best practice, improve their leadership skills and have time to network and develop positive working relationships with their peers.

One Team Hour

The One Team Hour is a popular, quarterly meeting, led by the Chief Executive, which all staff are welcome to join remotely.

These meetings are an opportunity to hear, first-hand, about Council strategies and how various projects are progressing. It is also an opportunity to celebrate achievements and hear updates from different service areas.
