Bedford Borough Council signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant in 2012 and it promises that those who serve or have served, and their families will be treated fairly in all aspects of life. 

An updated version of the document was resigned in 2024 when we were granted Gold Award status of the Employment Recognition Scheme, and we are proud to reiterate our commitment to the armed forces community. Whether you are currently serving in the Armed Forces, are a reservist, or have previously served, there are many organisations who offer guidance and support for you and your family.

A compensation scheme for UK serving and former service personnel injured because of their service in His Majesty's Armed Forces. It compensates for any injury, illness or death which was caused by service on or after 6 April 2005. (must be within last 7 years).

There are two main types of AFCS awards:

  • Tax-free lump sum payment for pain and suffering.
  • Guaranteed Income Payment (GIP) which is a tax free, index linked monthly payment.

War Pension Scheme

You can claim under the War Pension Scheme if you are no longer serving in His Majesty’s (HM) Armed Forces and your claimed disablement arose before 6 April 2005 (you do not need to have a combat injury to claim).

Veterans’ Growth provides horticultural therapy to veterans facing mental health issues.

Set amidst beautiful Sussex farmland, our site offers a relaxing green space where veterans can come to immerse themselves in nature and learn horticultural skills.

During their time on site, participants socialise with other veterans, gain confidence, knowledge and experience and some go on to find employment within the industry.

The charity also conducts woodland management and green woodwork, alongside Mechanics and Carpentry skills.
