Guidance for reporting suspected fraud

Below is the type of information that can help us investigate suspected fraud. Please give as much more information as possible.

The person you suspect

  • Can you describe the person you are reporting? (Height, weight, hair colour and style, any distinguishing features, glasses, tattoos)
  • Do they own a vehicle?
  • What make, colour, registration number is it?
  • Where is it parked? (This is particularly important if we have to conduct surveillance - it is very useful to know where the vehicle is kept)
  • If they are working, do you know where they work?
  • If details of employer not known, what time does the person leave home for work?
  • How do they get to work? (Own vehicle, are they collected, do they walk, catch the bus, cycle?)
  • If they are collected, what vehicle picks them up?
  • What time do they leave for work, and return home?
  • What days do they work?
  • Do they wear a uniform for work?
  • How long have they been working?
  • Do they have undeclared capital?
  • How much do they have?
  • Where is it? (Which bank, building society etc)
  • How do you know?

Are you prepared to give your name and contact details? We will not tell the person who reported them, but it may be that you have further information, and talking to you could help our enquiries.

People living with person you suspect

  • If they have someone living with them, what is the persons name?
  • What is the relationship? (Partner, lodger)
  • Does this person work, if so, where?
  • If details of employer are not known, what time does this person leave for work? How do they get to work? (Are they collected, do they walk, catch the bus, bicycle?)
  • If they are collected, what vehicle picks them up?
  • What time do they leave for work, and return home?
  • What days do they work?
  • Do they wear a uniform for work?
  • How long have they been working?
  • Do they own a vehicle?

If the allegation concerns employment

  • Employer's name, place/address of workplace
  • Departure time/return time to and from home
  • Full or part time work?
  • Earnings
  • Is a uniform worn? - description?
  • Is there a company/private vehicle used (what type, colour, registration number)?
