As part of the Income Domain of the Indices of Deprivation 2019, a supplementary index has also been published which measures the proportion of children who are raised in income deprived households - defined as families that either receive Income Support or income-based Jobseekers Allowance or income-based Employment and Support Allowance or Pension Credit (Guarantee), or families not in receipt of these benefits but in receipt of Working Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit with an equivalised income (excluding housing benefit) below 60% of the national median before housing costs.
Nationally, Bedford Borough is in the mid range on IDACI, ranking 148 of 317 English local authorities (where 1 is the most deprived).
However, levels of child deprivation vary greatly by area. The Borough has one LSOA among the 0-10% most deprived areas in England on the IDACI measure, thirteen LSOAs among the 10-20% most deprived, and eleven among the 20-30% most deprived.
Compared to the last IDACI measure published in 2015, the number of LSOAs in the Borough which fall within the 0-30% most deprived areas nationally has fallen from 27 to 25. The number within the 0-10% most severely deprived areas declined from five in 2015 to one in 2019.
