Bedford Borough Health and Wellbeing Board has a duty to improve integrated working between local health care, social care, public health and other public service practitioners so that patients and service users experience more joined-up care, particularly when moving between health and social care.
The Health and Wellbeing Board is also responsible for leading locally on reducing health inequalities.
Statutory duties
Bedford Borough Health and Wellbeing Board has three main statutory duties:
- To assess the needs of their local population through the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA).
- To set out how these needs will be addressed through a Bedford Borough Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2024-2027 (PDF) that offers a strategic framework in which Bedford Borough Council, to Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Integrated Care Board (BLMK ICB), and NHS England can make their own commissioning decisions.
- To promote greater integration and partnership, including joint commissioning, integrated provision and pooled budgets.

Children, Young People and their Families Plan for Bedford Borough 2022-2027
Children’s Health and Wellbeing Partnership Group
The Children’s Health and Wellbeing Partnership Group, a subgroup of the Health and Wellbeing Board, has published the Children, Young People and their Families Plan for Bedford Borough (PDF) which has been written by children and young people for children and young people.
The six themes of the plan are:
- Feeling safe at home and in our community.
- Valuing and protecting the environment.
- Positive educational experiences for all.
- Strong and safe relationships.
- Good physical and mental health with supportive pathways.
- Listening and responding to the voice and lived experience of all children and young people, including early years.
