Transfer to secondary school

Most parents will need their children to transfer to secondary school at 11+ (the end of year 6). There are also secondary schools in other local authorities.

If your child is attending a local authority primary school and is due to transfer to secondary school in September 2021, you will receive an information sheet from your child's current school during the Autumn term 2020.

Make sure you read the School transfer booklet (PDF) first.

Apply online

We strongly recommend you apply online for a place. This will be available to you at the beginning of the admissions process.

If you are unable to apply online, please email the contact centre at:

If you live in Bedford Borough you must apply through us. If we're not your council you can find out who is on GOV.UK.

Open days / evenings

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic it is unlikely that schools will be able to hold these events in the normal way. Please visit their websites to establish how you can find out information about the school prior to making your application.

Closing date for applications

31 October 2020

National offer day 1 March 2021

If you have applied online, you will receive an email to let you know the outcome of your application. In addition, as the results will be posted to the online system overnight, you can log into your account to access the result of your application. If you have not applied online, we will post a letter to you on this day.

Those of you who have not been offered a place at your first preference school, please see this information sheet about transferring to secondary school, giving details about the number of applications and places offered at each school, and how to lodge an appeal.
