Every maintained school in England must provide a basic curriculum (RE, sex education and the National Curriculum).
Religious Education is a statutory subject of the basic curriculum whilst not being part of the National Curriculum.
RE is not subject to national statutory orders, instead, it is locally determined.
The local authority has responsibility for devising the Syllabus used for RE in the maintained schools in its locality.
They are advised by a Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education (SACRE) which convenes an Agreed Syllabus Conference to review the Syllabus every five years.
A new RE Agreed Syllabus 2024-2029 was launched in September 2023. Any school requiring an electronic copy can find the Syllabus and other useful documents and links via this secure page.
