The Ben & Bella trails have been commissioned by Bedford Borough Council as part of the Year of Reading 2025, and encourages little readers and their grown-ups to step beyond the pages of local author, Julia Jarman's, books and discover stories in the great outdoors. The trails invite families to explore Bedford's local parks, green spaces, and community areas where familiar Ben & Bella characters are cleverly hidden, waiting to be spotted along the way.

Each trail comes with a beautifully illustrated Spotter’s Guide, designed to engage children’s imaginations and help them follow simple clues to find their favourite characters and moments from titles like Big Blue Train and Big Red Bath. This interactive adventure combines the joy of reading with outdoor exploration, promoting a love of books, nature, and shared family experiences.

Join the fun and explore the free trails at the following times and locations:

  • Big Red Bath Trail – Bedford Park, 22 August, 1–4pm
  • Big Blue Train Trail – Russell Park, 23 August, 10am–1pm
  • Big Bouncy Bed Trail – Bedford Library, 22–24 August (during staffed hours)
  • Big Yellow Digger Trail – Mowsbury Park, 24 August, 10am–1pm

Local children’s performer Kaye Mahoney (who has produced the trails on behalf of BCA), will be hosting events at each park location. Families are encouraged to come down and meet ‘Kaye-lideslope’ as she tells stories alongside free craft activities and face-painting. Learn more about Kaye Mahoney, the trails, and BCA at the BCA website.
