In addition to services operated by commercial bus companies, there are a number of services run by local volunteer groups.
These organisations, known as community transport groups, provide two main types of service.
The Bedford Door to Door service operates a scheme for people unable to use conventional public transport and the Villager and Roadrunner operate local and shopping services to supplement the public transport network.
The Villager is one of Bedfordshire’s local community minibus schemes. It is managed and driven by volunteers from the area.
If you are interested in helping the project in any way, please telephone 01234 781920.
The Villager currently provides services from North West Bedfordshire villages to locations including Milton Keynes, Northampton, Peterborough and St Ives as well as to Sainsbury’s Clapham and other locations. Timetables are available in the timetables section of the website.
The Villager community bus is available for hire (with or without a driver). Please ring 01234 781920 for further information.
The bus is a 16 seater Mercedes operated by volunteers from the community and is based in Kempston. It is intended to provide a regular transport system for villages and hamlets which have no, or little, commercial service. The drivers give their time freely.
There are services to Milton Keynes via Stewartby, to Milton Keynes via Bromham, from Aspley Guise to Bedford and from Bromham to Sainsburys at Kempston (timetables). There are other weekly runs from sheltered accommodation to stores in Bedford which run at other times, and it is possible others can be arranged.
The bus can also be hired on a private basis and can be driven by any driver with a standard car licence. Bookings for private hire can be made by calling co-ordinator Geoff Ware on 07776 340 114 .
