An exhilarating swimming and running event for schoolchildren will take place in Bedford this autumn.

The Bedford Junior Aquathlon returns on Sunday 11 October from 8.15am-12.30pm.

Now in its 20th year, the inclusive event combines swimming and running over varying distances, tailored to schoolchildren from Years 3 to 11. Each school year will have its own distance to run and number of laps to swim.

Swimming will be held in Robinson Pools & Fitness in Park Avenue, while running will take place in Bedford Park. The whole event will have a rolling start which means each child starts 20-30 seconds after the next (depending on their age), so participants will compete against the clock rather than each other.

A presentation of the winners of each age group will be announced at the finishing line after all the races have finished.

The popular event, organised by Bedford Borough Council’s Sports Development Unit and sponsored by Gale Family Charity Trust, will be capped to 200 participants to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all entrants.

Please note that if the 200-cap is reached before deadline, registrations will close early. Entries will not be accepted on the day.

Booking is now open and closes on Tuesday 29 September at 5pm, or when full.

Entrance fee costs £10 per participant.

The entry fees will help to fund the event, which is also supported by GLL, as part of the leisure contract with the Council.

Cllr John Wheeler, Portfolio Holder for Customer Experience, (inc. Leisure, Recreation and Culture) said; “The Bedford Junior Aquathlon is a much-loved event that promotes healthy, active lifestyles for schoolchildren.

“The young athletes will compete against the clock in a safe, supportive and welcoming environment for all participants and their families.”

He added; “It will bring schoolchildren from all over the Borough and surrounding areas together in our beautiful town. So, don’t miss this exciting opportunity for your child to take part in one of Bedford’s favourite sporting events!”
