Bedford Borough Council would like to remind residents that garden waste collections using the green-lidded bins run annually from 1 March to 30 November. Collections pause over the winter months, from 1 December to 28 February.

This is a non-statutory service provided to assist those residents with gardens or green spaces in managing seasonal garden waste. Councillor Nicola Gribble, Portfolio Holder for Environment, said, “Our garden waste service supports residents who have outdoor spaces that generate waste through spring, summer, and autumn. As volumes of garden waste drop in winter, pausing collections helps us use resources responsibly and focus on maintaining quality services.”

The Council is currently consulting on its Waste Strategy, seeking residents’ views on how to improve waste services sustainably across Bedford Borough. This consultation includes all aspects of waste management, including green waste collections, and residents are encouraged to participate and share their thoughts. It can be found at www.bedford.gov.uk/Consultations

For managing garden waste outside collection months or for extra volume, residents may consider:

  • home composting to recycle garden material and enrich soil health.
  • the Household Waste Recycling Centre on Barkers Lane, open year-round for garden waste, further details can be found at www.bedford.gov.uk/HWRC
  • Leaving fallen leaves in garden beds to nourish the soil and support local wildlife during autumn and winter.

The Council thanks residents for their understanding and continued support as it balances community needs, environmental responsibility, and budget considerations.
