As part of Bedford Borough Council’s Year of Reading, we are asking every councillor to tell us about one of their favourite books.

And this week we spoke to Councillor Mohammed Nawaz, Councillor for Kempston Central and East who chose The Richest Man in Babylon by George S Clason. He described the 1926 book as “a timeless classic in personal finance, that presents essential financial wisdom through engaging storytelling”.

Councillor Nawaz said: “The book's setting in ancient Babylon, coupled with its parables, adds a unique and captivating dimension, making complex ideas about wealth-building both accessible and memorable. Arkad, the protagonist, transforms his life from humble beginnings to become the wealthiest man in Babylon.

“His key financial principles, such as saving at least 10% of one’s income and living within one’s means, are simple yet profound guidelines that can be applied to anyone's financial situation.

“The concept of ‘paying yourself first’ really struck a chord with me, as it highlights the importance of prioritising savings before indulging in discretionary spending. Moreover, Clason emphasizes the value of seeking advice from knowledgeable mentors, which aligns with my belief in continuous learning and self-improvement.”

Councillor Nawaz added; “The practical insights presented through relatable characters illustrate that financial success is attainable through consistent application of these principles. Ultimately, reading this book is not merely about understanding financial concepts but also about inspiring a proactive approach to managing finances.

“It serves as a compelling guide to achieving financial independence and security, making it invaluable for anyone looking to enhance their financial.”

Bedford Borough Council’s Year of Reading will take place throughout 2025, with a wide range of events and initiatives to celebrate and promote reading across the Borough, including town centre performances, literary trails, and author readings.

There will also be a range of volunteering opportunities, such as the chance for adults to volunteer in local primary schools, helping to improve children’s reading skills and life chances.
