Could you benefit from checking out the range of dyslexia-friendly books in Bedford Borough’s libraries?

As part of Bedford Borough Council’s Year of Reading, we are featuring a wide range of stock types available in our libraries.

According to the British Dyslexia Association, around 10% of the UK population are believed to be dyslexic. Standard print books can be a challenge for someone with dyslexia, but you can borrow dyslexia-friendly books from our libraries.

Bloomsbury have recently published some of their best-know adult tiles in an accessible format by using a different font on cream-coloured paper and blue text to increase page/text contrast.

For children and teenagers, Barrington Stoke has been publishing accessible books for a number of years, many of them by popular authors. The book content and subject matter has the age of the child or teenager in mind, with the text edited to suit the ability and shorter chapters.  The font, layout, spacing and off-white paper makes the books dyslexia friendly.

Speak to staff at any of our libraries if you’d like to borrow dyslexia-friendly books, or you can search the online catalogue to request them.

Bedford Borough Council’s Year of Reading is taking place throughout 2025, with a wide range of events and initiatives to celebrate and promote reading across the Borough, including town centre performances, literary trails, and author readings.

There will also be a range of volunteering opportunities, such as the chance for adults to volunteer in local primary schools, helping to improve children’s reading skills and life chances.

To find out more or to get involved visit www.bedford.gov.uk/yearofreading or email yearofreading@bedford.gov.uk
