Library spotlight: Comics and manga

Bedford Borough Council's graphic novels and manga selection

Everyone knows the library is the place to borrow thrillers, picture books, and cookery tomes. But graphic novels, comic books, and manga - for children, teenagers, and adults alike - are becoming increasingly popular in Bedford Borough Libraries.

Not only do they offer a fun and entertaining break from the real world (and everyone loves a spot of Spidey or a bout of Batman), reading these formats can also help us become better readers.

A report from the National Literacy Trust showed that children and young people who read comics were more engaged with reading, regardless of their age, and were motivated to read comics because they felt it supported their wellbeing and provided opportunities to learn about different cultures. Findings highlighted that “By advocating for comics as a fun and legitimate reading format, we can continue to inspire a future generation of readers and creators,”.

We are promoting different stock types as part of Bedford Borough Council’s Year of Reading, which is taking place throughout 2025 with a wide range of events and initiatives including town centre performances, literary trails, and author readings.

There will also be a range of volunteering opportunities, such as the chance for adults to volunteer in local primary schools, helping to improve children’s reading skills and life chances.
