Great news for cyclists in Bedford - the cycle shelter at Harpur Square, Horne Lane, is receiving a seasonal refresh to keep bikes protected and the area tidy. The shelter, funded by the Government’s £1 million Town Deal Accelerator Fund, is now managed by Bedford Borough Council’s Passenger Transport and Sustainable Travel Team.

With over 1,000 people registered to use the shelter so far it has proved popular with cyclists, one user said, “It’s fantastic to have the shelter available when I cycle into town, it feels much more secure leaving my bike in there, and the registration process was really simple. I now just open the app, touch the screen, and the door unlocks.”

Another user of the cycle shelter said, “‘When riding into town with my son, we love using the safe and secure shelter. It’s so easy to use and right in the town centre!”

As part of this refresh, a thorough clean-up is underway from the council street cleansing team, and window cleaning is also planned. A new poster detailing information about the shelter is now in place on the front door to help raise awareness.

Importantly, there is a new registration process for cyclists wishing to use the shelter. To register, residents should email Sustainable.Transport@bedford.gov.uk with their full name, contact number, and address. Registered users will receive login details within seven working days, granting access through the OneKey app for a more secure and convenient experience.

Councillor Nicola Gribble, Portfolio Holder for Environment, said, “This cycle shelter offers Bedford’s cyclists a safe, secure, and weather-protected facility right in the heart of town. This maintenance and refreshed registration system underlines our commitment to supporting sustainable travel. We encourage all cycle commuters heading into town to register and make the most of this great resource.”

The cycle shelter is located at Harpur Square, Horne Lane. The What3words location is ///bikes.safe.town for easy navigation.

Cyclists, visitors, and residents alike are encouraged to take advantage of this free facility when they cycle to Bedford town centre.
