Bedford Borough Council, in partnership with Hawaa Empower and GLL (Better), is announcing the successful launch of a women-only badminton programme. This innovative initiative aims to empower women through fitness and community, addressing the need for more inclusive sports activities in the area.
The first session, held on Thursday 24 April, marked a significant step towards creating a safe and welcoming environment for women from diverse backgrounds. The programme is designed to overcome barriers that often prevent women from accessing mainstream fitness spaces due to privacy concerns, religious expectations, and underrepresentation.
Councillor Sarah Gallagher, Portfolio Holder for Customer Experience, Leisure and Culture at Bedford Borough Council, said; "We are delighted to see this programme come to life, providing a vital space for women to engage in physical activity without compromising their values. By supporting initiatives like this, we aim to foster a more inclusive community where everyone can thrive."
Shapna Khanam, Founder and Director of Hawaa Empower, added; "This initiative is about more than just sport; it's about equity, representation, and improving health outcomes for women who are often underrepresented.
“By offering culturally sensitive, affordable sessions, we're removing barriers and empowering women to prioritise their wellbeing in a space where they feel seen and valued."
Aaron Colbert, Community Sports Manager for Better in the Partnership with Bedford Borough Council, said; “Every day in our Better leisure centres we see the huge benefits that exercise brings to people. Not only in terms of improving their physical fitness but also their confidence and self-worth. We’re delighted to be partnering with Hawaa Empower and Bedford Borough Council and hope this relationship enables more women to incorporate exercise into their weekly routine.”
The sessions will continue to run weekly on Thursdays, 10-11am during term time at John Bunyan Sports & Fitness Centre, Mile Rd., Bedford MK42 9TS. This programme is part of the national "No Strings Badminton" initiative from Badminton England, offering low-cost, fun 'pay-and-play' sessions.
All women are invited to join these energising sessions, whether a complete beginner or a seasoned player. The programme is open to women over sixteen years of age, and each session is just £2. Spaces are limited so booking in advance is recommended.
