Bedford Borough Council is delighted to announce the exciting new Autumn term of the hugely popular Active Adults programme, with bookings opening Tuesday (2 September) at 12.30pm.

With 39 courses covering 21 different activities, and 13 brand-new options to try, there’s something for everyone - from complete beginners looking for a friendly introduction to a sport, to those ready to build on existing skills. This term offers 16 courses based in local villages, 13 evening sessions, and specialist sessions for women and beginners across a variety of activities.

The programme starts on the week commencing 29 September and most courses run for eight weeks, unless otherwise stated. Prices vary depending on activity, with all courses designed to remain affordable and accessible to residents.

Activities available include badminton, boxing (women’s only), yoga, Pilates, cardio tennis, golf, indoor bowls, Zumba, paddle sports, dancing, strength and conditioning, shooting, walking football and many more. Among the exciting new additions are Kendo – Japanese fencing, Yoga with Meditation, SoulSwingJazz exercise classes, Legs, Bums and Tums, and new ‘Golf in a Day’ and ‘Golf in Half a Day’ experiences.

Councillor Sarah Gallagher, Portfolio Holder for Customer Experience, Leisure and Culture said; “It’s fantastic to introduce another packed term of Active Adults courses, offering more choice than ever before. Whether you want to develop a skill, boost your fitness, meet new people, or simply try something different, there’s a course for you.

“These sessions are run in supportive, welcoming settings that make it easy to get involved, whatever your ability. We’re proud to provide opportunities that help residents lead healthier, more active and connected lives - and we can’t wait to see more people getting involved this autumn.”

Participants from previous terms have praised the positive impact of the programme:

“These courses allow us to meet new people, keep active, and explore new hobbies. Being outdoors is great for mental health and wellbeing.”

“I’d toyed with the idea of learning golf for years - this affordable local beginner’s course made it possible. The instructor was brilliant, friendly, and created a no-pressure atmosphere.”

Bookings open on 2 September at 12.30pm via www.bedford.gov.uk/ActiveAdults

Previously, many courses have sold out quickly, so residents are encouraged to secure places early.

The course charges are kept as low as possible to help encourage participation, and funding taken from attendees is used to support the hire of facilities and payment of coaches. The programmes are also part-funded by Public Health, who recognise the importance of physical activity in the community.
