Bedford Borough Council has announced the successful completion and unveiling of a new renewable energy project: an 84kW solar photovoltaic (PV) array paired with a 69kW battery storage system installed on the rooftop of Queen Street Multi-storey Car Park. The installation, comprising 188 solar panels, has already reduced the car park’s electricity consumption by over 50% in March 2025 alone, marking a significant step towards the council’s target of net zero carbon emissions by 2030.

Tom Wootton, Elected Mayor of Bedford Borough, officially unveiled the project on Tuesday, 29 April, as part of the borough’s ongoing Earth Day series of events. This initiative is funded through the council’s carbon management capital budget and was installed by Energy Efficient Solutions Group via the LASER framework, a trusted energy procurement and management service for public bodies.

This solar project is one of three rooftop solar installations the council is delivering, with Kempston Pool’s system completed earlier this year and Lurke Street Multi-storey Car Park’s installation scheduled for completion by summer 2025. These projects demonstrate the council’s commitment to harnessing renewable energy to reduce carbon emissions and energy costs, setting a strong example of sustainable infrastructure within the community.

In addition to these council projects, Bedford Borough residents and businesses are encouraged to join the Solar Together Bedfordshire scheme - a group-buying initiative that helps households and small businesses access high-quality solar panels and battery storage at reduced prices. The scheme offers a hassle-free way to benefit from renewable energy, with no obligation to proceed after registration. It also provides expert support, competitive pricing from vetted installers, and options for battery storage and electric vehicle charge points. Registration for the 2025 scheme is now open, and interested parties can register for free at www.solartogether.co.uk/bedfordshire

Councillor Nicola Gribble, Portfolio Holder for Environment, said; "This solar and battery storage installation at Queen Street car park is a fantastic example of how we are leading Bedford Borough towards a cleaner, greener future. By cutting energy consumption and carbon emissions, we are not only protecting our environment but also reducing costs for the council and our residents.

“I encourage all residents and local businesses to consider joining the Solar Together scheme to take advantage of well-priced solar panels and battery storage, helping us all to build a more sustainable and resilient Bedford."

Tom Wootton, Elected Mayor of Bedford Borough added; "I am proud to unveil this important renewable energy project, which highlights our commitment to tackling climate change and achieving net zero by 2030. The Queen Street car park solar array is a tangible demonstration of how local government can take meaningful action to reduce carbon emissions and inspire our community to embrace sustainable energy solutions.

“I also urge residents and businesses to register for the Solar Together scheme before the deadline to join this collective effort in making clean energy more accessible and affordable."
