Bedford Borough Council has announced a major refurbishment project for the Grade II listed Bedford Corn Exchange, set to take place over the next two financial years, 2025/26 and 2026/27. This significant investment will modernise the internal features and facilities of this iconic building, ensuring it continues to serve as a vibrant cultural and community venue for decades to come.

The refurbishment will include an interior redecoration, including new paintwork and flooring improvements. The toilets will be modernised with an improved layout, and upgraded lighting and sound systems featuring a new star cloth backdrop, projector, and screen will be installed. New chairs and tables will enhance the comfort and experience for event attendees. Additionally, the kitchen will receive brand new equipment, replacing the outdated and unrepairable appliances currently in place.

The project will cover key areas including the Corn Exchange main hall, the Howard Room, the Harpur Suite, and the kitchen facilities.

This refurbishment marks the first major upgrade since the last refurbishment 30 years ago and is part of Bedford Borough Council’s ongoing commitment to revitalising the town’s cultural infrastructure.

Councillor Sarah Gallagher, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Culture and Customer Experience, said, "This refurbishment is much more than just maintenance – it’s a forward-thinking investment in Bedford’s cultural heart. By modernising the Corn Exchange, we are not only preserving an important historic venue but also enhancing the experience for local residents, visitors, and businesses. These improvements will support a diverse range of events, attract new audiences, and celebrate the rich heritage of Bedford."

The Corn Exchange, which dates back to 1874, has a storied history including its role during World War II as a base for the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the site of Glenn Miller’s first British broadcast. This refurbishment will ensure the building remains a key cultural landmark in Bedford Borough for future generations.

Work is scheduled to begin in early 2026 and is expected to be completed by March 2027. Bedford Borough Council looks forward to keeping the community informed throughout the project.

Bedford Corn Exchange continues to offer a rich and diverse programme of events throughout 2025, featuring music, comedy, family shows, and theatrical performances. Upcoming highlights include Chris Mccausland: Yonks!, Totally Tina, ABBA Forever, and Josh Widdicombe, along with family favourites like Dinosaur Live and Milkshake! Live. The Bedfordshire Symphony Orchestra and the Bedford Choral Society have events soon and the Philharmonia Orchestra will also return for their 31st season in residence.
