Rivercare event this weekend is cancelled

This weekend’s Rivercare community volunteering event has had to be cancelled, due to the high river levels and on-going poor weather conditions.

The event which would have taken place alongside the river near Town Bridge in St Mary’s Gardens, with volunteers picking litter along the riverside, and scuba divers, the EA and kayakers supporting in the water, will now be postponed until next spring.

Councillor Jim Weir, Portfolio Holder for Environment said; “I know that this will be a disappointment to the many residents of all ages who take pride in our river and are always keen to help keep it beautiful.

“But we always strive to put the safety of our residents first, and will look forward to holding the event early next year instead.”

For more information or to inquire about volunteering, please contact Bedford Borough Council at volunteering@bedford.gov.uk.

Teams at Bedford Borough Council install, maintain and empty 1,800 litter, dog, layby and dual recycling bins throughout Bedford Borough and are regularly out clearing litter. Residents can support these teams by reporting a major litter problem, or an overflowing or damaged street bin, at www.bedford.gov.uk/litter.

Bedford Borough Council also welcomes local groups who wish to organise their own Community Clean Ups, details of how to do this can be found at www.bedford.gov.uk/leisure-parks-and-sport/parks-and-open-spaces/get-involved/community-volunteering.
