Key authorities gave another update on the investigation into the incident in Cleat Hill, Bedford, at a public meeting on Monday evening.
Residents who live in the evacuation area were able to hear from and ask questions of Bedford Borough Council, Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, Bedfordshire Police, the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) and the British Association of Insurers.
Two people are confirmed to have died following the explosion and subsequent fire, a cordon remains in place for the safety of the public and to allow operations to take place, and the police, fire service and HSE are actively investigating the cause of the explosion.
More details were provided about the ongoing investigation, with gas samples being collected to provide more information about source. In response to concerns about the gas itself, the panel explained that methane is non-toxic and should not cause any health effects to residents.
Residents were given assurances about the security of their homes, and while they were advised to speak directly to their insurers the representative from the British Association of Insurers offered to follow-up directly if required.
Residents from the evacuation area are being sent regular messages with updates every day, while those from the surrounding area have their own updates.
A set of FAQs for all residents across the Borough is also available on the Bedford Borough Council website which can be found at www.bedford.gov.uk/environmental-issues/emergencies/cleat-hill-incident
50 households were evacuated following the incident, and they have all now had a chance to access their property, giving them the opportunity to collect their belongings whilst being safely escorted.
Other support offered to residents has included the creation of an Advice and Support Centre, the provision of temporary accommodation to 31 households, financial support, and a dedicated 24-hour emergency helpline. There is also the offer of quiet working space at Borough Hall from Monday-Friday, including free WiFi and access to free car parking.
