On Sunday 10 November 2024, Mayor of Bedford Borough, Tom Wootton, joined by civic leaders, the armed forces, veterans' associations and dignitaries, paid tribute to the bravery and sacrifices made by those who served and continue to serve in defence of our peace and freedom.
In addition to the wreath-laying, this year’s ceremony featured poignant readings from the Bishop of Bedford, a moment of silence, a wonderful performance from the Bedford Town Band and an incredible parade. The parade formed up at the War Memorial before making its way down The Embankment to finish at Harpur Square. The Mayor, HM Vice Lord-Lieutenant and High Sherrif were then invited to inspect the parade.
Mayor of Bedford Borough, Tom Wootton, commented on the ceremony adding; “Today, we pause to remember the legacy of courage, resilience, and selflessness left by our service members who gave up their today for our tomorrow.
I am proud Bedford Borough is able to come together, drawing veterans from various service branches and people from across different faiths, cultures and backgrounds to pay tribute.”
As the wreaths rested among poppies and other tributes, the ceremony closed with a renewed sense of community as we reflect on the impact of past conflicts and the value of unity in the face of adversity.
