Key authorities met with residents again on Monday evening, to provide the latest update on the investigation into the incident in Cleat Hill, Bedford.
Residents who live in the evacuation area were able to hear from and ask questions of Bedford Fire and Rescue Service, Bedfordshire Police, Bedford Borough Council, the Health and Safety Executive, British Geological Survey, and the Ground Source Heat Pump Association, at a meeting hosted at Borough Hall.
Two people are confirmed to have died following the explosion and subsequent fire which occurred on Saturday 19 October. A cordon remains in place for the safety of the public and to allow operations to take place, with the police, fire service and HSE actively investigating the cause of the explosion.
Residents were assured that public safety remains the first and foremost priority, with the Local Resilience Forum (LRF) still in the ‘response stage’ of the incident.
While all residents who have requested it have so far had the opportunity to return to their homes to safely collect personal belongings and essential items, attendees heard that additional windows for doing so were being organised.
Residents heard that enhanced monitoring for gas at the site is continuing, with samples currently being analysed.
There were also questions asked of the panel, including about having their central heating switched on in their homes, the other organisations which have been sharing their technical knowledge and experience, and the ongoing investigation.
Residents from homes in the evacuation area are being sent regular text messages with updates every day, while those from the surrounding area are being sent their own updates.
A set of FAQs for all residents across the Borough is also available on the Bedford Borough Council website which can be found at www.bedford.gov.uk/environmental-issues/emergencies/cleat-hill-incident
Other support offered to residents has included the creation of an Advice and Support Centre, the provision of temporary accommodation to 31 households, financial support, and a dedicated 24-hour emergency helpline. There is also the offer of quiet working space at Borough Hall from Monday-Friday, including free WiFi and access to free car parking.
