Bedford Borough Council have launch of our new strategy dedicated to addressing homelessness and rough sleeping within our community. This strategy outlines the Council’s vision for preventing homelessness, supporting those who experience it, ensuring an adequate supply of suitable accommodation, and minimising rough sleeping.

Councillor Phillippa Martin-Moran-Bryant, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Regulatory Services, said; “Homelessness is a profound challenge, affecting real lives. Our commitment is unwavering, and this strategy represents a solid starting point for making a meaningful difference in our community.”

"Across the Borough, we have witnessed a steady increase in the number of households, particularly single individuals, presenting as homeless over the past three years. Homelessness not only negatively impacts lives, well-being, and opportunities but also poses a significant financial challenge for the Council. Therefore, preventing homelessness by assisting people to remain in their homes or swiftly access alternative suitable accommodation is a key objective of the Council’s priority to support families and vulnerable residents.”

The new strategy for 2024-2029 is grounded in the latest housing data for the area and includes actions based on three core objectives:

  • Prevent homelessness as early as possible,
  • Increase the supply of housing for those who are homeless, and
  • Provide support to those who need it

Councillor Martin-Moran-Bryant added, “Thanks to government funding and our collaborative efforts with local stakeholders, we have reduced rough sleeping down from peak of 79 in 2017. Over the next few years, we aim to build on our successes, focusing on preventing all types of homelessness, including assisting less visible groups such as families, and broadening our partnership scope.

“Through this strategy, I am confident we will see continuous improvements in tackling and preventing homelessness, thereby positively impacting people’s lives.

“Early prevention and support are essential, and a collaborative approach is vital to increasing housing supply,” Councillor Martin-Moran-Bryant explained. “We are already making strides in implementing this strategy. We have acquired more temporary accommodation and hired new staff to enhance support and prevention efforts. Our commitment extends beyond promises; we are actively working to build more affordable housing for Borough residents.”
