Santa Claus, Tom Jones, knitting and 35 years of dedication.
That is the story of Carol Bobel, who is celebrating three-and-a-half decades as a carer for Bedford Borough Council.
Carol first worked at the Moat House, and then Rivermead Residential Home, before transferring to Puttenhoe Residential Home 19 years ago.
Carol has married since joining the Puttenhoe team, and her husband Martin has been a frequent visitors on Christmas mornings when she has been working, delivering presents to residents, dressed as Santa!
She also has a very keen interest in knitting, sharing her passion with many residents over the years, teaching some new skills, or reigniting the interest of others who had previously been knitters.
The residents’ knitting circles established over the years have also benefitted the wider community, with over 200 scarves being knitted for the homeless to help keep them warm in the winter months.
And their latest project is supporting the National Animal Trust, with residents so far providing 60 knitted blankets with Carol’s support and encouragement.
To celebrate Carol’s 35 years, staff and residents at Puttenhoe held a party, which included everyone singing along to songs from Carol’s favourite – the Welsh legend Tom Jones.
Councillor Robert Rigby, Portfolio Holder for Valuing Families: Adults Services attended and presented Carol with flowers and a card from the Mayor.
And the council’s Care Homes Operations manager Fleur Cullinane was also present, handing Carol flowers and making a lovely speech reflecting on Carol’s service over the years. Fleur was Carol’s manager when she worked at Rivermead, and Carol moved to Puttenhoe when Fleur moved there.
David Yourin, Home Manager at Puttenhoe Residential Home, said; “Carol is a valued member of the care team and has supported many residents over the years.
“We were delighted to celebrate her dedication.”
