Bedford Borough Council’s outstanding support for the Armed Forces community has been recognised by the Ministry of Defence. Awarding the Council the highest accolade, the Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award.
The award was received by Craig Austin, Director for Environment, and Eileen Womersley, Armed Forces Covenant Senior Officer, during a ceremony held on Thursday 14 November at the iconic Churchill War Rooms in London. This recognition reflects the Council’s unwavering commitment to upholding the Armed Forces Covenant and fostering an inclusive, supportive environment for service personnel, veterans, and their families.
As a Gold Award winner, Bedford Borough Council leads by example in championing the employment of Armed Forces personnel and their families. From implementing flexible HR policies to supporting reservists and veterans, the Council has set a benchmark for integrating Armed Forces-friendly practices into the workplace.
Mayor for Bedford Borough, Tom Wootton, commented on the achievement saying; “I am so proud that our Council was able to receive this incredible recognition.
These efforts serve as an inspiration to other Councils on the positive value that the hiring of Armed Forces personnel holds, and highlights the wealth of skills and experience they bring to the workforce”
