Independent Person for the Standards Committee
We are looking for people to take on the roles of 'Independent Person' and ‘Reserve Independent Person’ for the Standards Committee of Bedford Council and the Town and Parish Councils within the Borough of Bedford.
Elected Members and Town / Parish Councillors work to an agreed Code of Conduct and you will be required to give your opinion on any complaints that are received. You will also be required to give advice following any investigation.
Applicants should be able to demonstrate a commitment to maintaining high standards in public life and be interested in local government.
Applicants cannot be related to, or be a close friend of, current or former Councillors or Officers of Bedford Council or the Town / Parish Councils within Bedford Borough.
The roles
You would be expected to attend in person any Standards Committee meetings and if acting as the main Independent Person, provide recommendations for any Sub-Committee hearings on Councillor complaints.
An annual allowance will be payable, and you will be able to claim travel and subsistence expenses.

Independent Member of Audit Committee
We are looking for an 'Independent Member' to join our Audit Committee here at Bedford Borough Council.
There are seven Elected Members on the Audit Committee who are vital in supporting good governance, strong financial management and effective internal and external audits. An Independent Member is now being sought to provide complementary expertise and an independent perspective to improve our governance arrangements.
The role
Applicants should have experience and an understanding of good corporate governance, risk management and the principles and practices of audit, along with a working knowledge of Local Government accounting requirements. There would be an expectation to attend, in person the Council’s Audit Committee meetings, approximately four a year.
Applicants cannot be related to, or be a close friend of, current or former Councillors or officers of Bedford Borough Council.
An annual allowance will be payable to the Independent Member and you will be able to claim travel and subsistence expenses.
