Mayor’s Climate Action Event

Bedford Borough Council hosted an event on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 March 2022 to encourage residents and businesses to become more sustainable.

The Council are committed to tackling climate change through our Net Zero vision (PDF) and by supporting residents and businesses to go greener.

Business morning

On Friday morning we hosted the business event in the Howard Rooms which provided an opportunity for businesses from across the Borough to come together to share best practices and learn how to become more energy efficient.

There were speakers from the Bedford Borough Council, bpha, Robinson & Hall Chartered Surveyors and the Green Business Network, as well as many other organisations there as stallholders.

We had over 50 people from a range of businesses attend the event to hear speakers and talk to stallholders.

Residents’ fair

On Saturday we held the public event in the Harpur Suite and Harpur Square. Inside, members of the public were able to come in to chat with a variety of stallholders about how to save energy and money.

People were given information on how to access government grants and how to improve the energy efficiency of their homes.

Stallholders at the Mayors Climate Action Event included:

  • Bedford Borough Council Departments
  • Bedford Climate Change Forum
  • Growing Beds
  • Heat Pump Federation
  • Kempston Climate Change Group
  • Marston Vale Community Rail
  • Plastic Free Bedford
  • Refill Bedford

Outside, the Sustainable Transport Team spoke to people about making more environmentally conscious journeys to work and school.

Dr Bike also attended the event and provided free bike checks throughout the day.

Enterprise Car Club, which provides short-term rental electric and hybrid vehicles, also had several people sign up using a unique discount code from the event.

It was fantastic to see so many people keen to become more sustainable so that they can do their bit for the planet as well as save on energy bills.

Solar together scheme

Another popular scheme from the day was Solar Together.

Solar Together is a group-buying scheme that helps households get a reduced price on the installation of solar panels. The more people that register, the better bargaining power Solar Together has to get you a more competitive price.
