The census is a unique survey that happens every 10 years.

It produces a snapshot of all the people and households in England and Wales – the most detailed information we have about our society.

It has been carried out every 10 years since 1801, with the exception of 1941.

Census day was 21 March

Data from the 2021 Census is not expected to be published until 2022 at the earliest by the Office of National Statistics (ONS).
