Car boot sales and fairs

Apply for a car boot licence

If you plan to hold a car boot sale to raise funds for your charity, club or organisation within six and two third miles of Bedford centre, you will need to apply to the Markets team for a licence. This is because the Council’s Market Charter provides that no market is permitted to be held within the said the boundary unless the Council has first granted a licence permitting the market to be held.

Licences are issued on an annual basis. This licence will allow up to 10 car boot sales in a calendar year (starting January), so you will need to re-apply at the end of December. You will need to be a nominated representative of your organisation and to provide documentary evidence of the Charity Registration Number if relevant.

We only issue licences for car boot sales within the said boundary for charitable, sporting, educational or social purposes and that are of direct benefit to local causes or of direct benefit to residents within the Borough and those parts of Central Bedfordshire Council that come within the said boundary.
