National government is making significant improvements to the process of applying for postal and proxy votes, aimed at enhancing accessibility and efficiency for electors. Since Tuesday, 31 October, residents in Bedford Borough now have the option to apply for a postal vote through a simplified online application form at www.bedford.gov.uk/your-council/elections-and-voting/postal-voting.

In the past, postal votes could only be requested through paper forms. With the introduction of the online application system, residents now have a more convenient and streamlined method to apply for postal votes. Paper forms will still be available for those who prefer this option and can be accessed via the Electoral Commission’s website at www.electoralcommission.org.uk/i-am-a/voter. Alternatively, residents can request paper forms from Bedford Borough Council's Electoral Services team via email at electoral.registration@bedford.gov.uk or by contacting the Customer Services team by phone.

It is important to note that under the new regulations, postal votes will have a maximum duration of three years. Voters will need to re-apply for their postal vote at the end of this period. Current postal vote holders do not need to take any immediate action; the Council will notify them when it is time to renew their postal vote.

Proxy voting procedures have also been updated. According to the new rules, voters can now act as a proxy for up to two people, regardless of their relationship. For UK voters residing overseas, proxy voters may be eligible to act on behalf of up to four people. To apply for certain types of proxy votes, residents can visit www.gov.uk/apply-proxy-vote.

To facilitate these changes, a National Insurance number will be required on both postal vote and proxy vote applications. In situations where this information is unavailable, alternative proof of identity may be accepted.

Commenting on these changes, Laura Church, Chief Executive of Bedford Borough Council, said, "We are dedicated to making the voting process as accessible and straightforward as possible for our residents. These updates reflect our commitment to modernising our services, ensuring that everyone can exercise their right to vote easily and efficiently."

These changes align with the Elections Act and are part of Bedford Borough Council's ongoing efforts to simplify and enhance the voting process for the local community.
