Families who have changed lives across Bedford Borough had their dedication celebrated on Friday 13 October at the Foster Carers Celebrations, as a thank you for their selfless work.

The fantastic event saw more than 40 Bedford Borough Council foster carers and their families invited to the Mercure Bedford Centre Hotel, where both special achievement awards and long-service awards were handed to some of our wonderful foster carers.

A total of 130 nominations were made, as part of Bedford Borough Council’s dedication to honouring and appreciating our incredible foster carers, who provide love and support to Looked After children across the borough, helping them to remain in their community, take part in local clubs and activities, and stay close to their family and friends while they are fostered.

Nominations were made by social workers and other council staff members to celebrate the selfless contribution they have all made.

There was also a raffle for carers to show our gratitude, with prizes such as paintings, afternoon tea for four, watches, chocolates, games, and tea sets.

The Team Award went to five carers and recognised them for their contribution to developing the fostering service, working with other carers, and looking after young people.

47 carers shared the Horizon Award, which goes to those who have shown ambition, aspiration, and commitment to their development to provide quality care for young people.

And there were 13 Kinship Awards, for carers and fostering households who have given their time and commitment to promote and support a relative needing care.

The Voice Award went to 36 carers. This award recognises carers and households who have gone the extra mile in advocating for young people and helped their voice to be heard.

And the Rock Award was shared between 29 carers. This goes to carers and households who have shown resilience and commitment in supporting other carers and young people.

Seven carers and families received five-year long-service awards, each receiving a certificate and a box of chocolates.

And five sets of carers and families were recognised with long-service awards for 10 years of fostering. They each received a certificate and hamper basket.

Councillor Jane Walker, Portfolio Holder for Family, Education and Children's Services, said; “This was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate heroes of Bedford Borough, who have selflessly made a real difference to the lives of children and young people.

“Fostering is both challenging and enormously rewarding, as I know everyone here today will agree.”

Tom Wootton, Mayor of Bedford Borough, said; “Foster carers and families are a bedrock of what we do, and know that their care and dedication transforms children’s lives.

“I was delighted to say a personal thank you to some of them, and want them to know that everybody appreciates the role they play in children and young people’s lives each and every day.”
