An overgrown and unsightly area in Cody Road, Clapham, underwent a remarkable transformation late last year, thanks to the collaborative efforts of Bedford Borough Council, Engineering Services contractors, and Social Value funding. The area, once known for fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour, has been cleared, making it cleaner and safer for residents, garage users, and the surrounding community.

The project, made possible through a successful bid for Social Value funding, aimed to address the persistent issues plaguing the area surrounding garages in Cody Road. Under the innovative Social Value scheme, ward councillors across Bedford Borough submitted proposals to improve their communities. Engineering Services contractor, Heidelberg Materials, and its sub-contractors, including Green Valley Construction, played a key role in carrying out the much-needed cleanup.

Staff from Green Valley Construction removed overgrown vegetation from the front and sides of the garages, drastically improving the look of the site. The initiative, which took place in September, coincided with the work by Green Valley Construction and Heidelberg Materials, resurfacing of the A6 Paula Radcliffe Way.

Jim Weir, Portfolio Holder for Environment, Highways, and Transport at Bedford Borough Council, expressed his satisfaction with the successful cleanup initiative, stating, "We are delighted to witness the positive transformation of the Cody Road area. This project showcases the effectiveness of collaboration between the council, contractors, and local communities. It not only enhances the visual appeal of the neighbourhood but also fosters a safer environment for residents and garage users. We are grateful for the contributions of all involved parties, demonstrating the power of collective action in creating positive change."

The cleanup initiative received praise from local representatives, with Clapham and Oakley Ward Councillor Jane Walker expressing her satisfaction, saying, "The parish council is delighted with the works. Please thank your team, from the Parish Council and residents of Clapham."

Clapham Parish Council clerk Rosemary Plum echoed these sentiments, remarking, "I would like to put on record my thanks for a job well done! The work carried out around the Cody Road garages is very much appreciated by residents as well as the Parish Council."

Clapham and Oakley Ward Councillor Jon Abbott, added, “I am pleased to see the residents of Clapham gaining a community benefit from the A6 Paula Radcliffe Way works, thanks to Bedford Borough Council and their Highways Partners.”

The successful completion of the Cody Road cleanup project stands as a testament to the commitment of Bedford Borough Council and its partners to enhancing the quality of life for residents and fostering a sense of pride in the local community.
