Fostering is when someone looks after a child or young person who is unable to stay with their own (birth) family.

It could be for short period of time, or more long term depending on the circumstances.

The child or young person lives in the foster carer's home, so you’ll need a spare room.

You’ll be expected to provide the obvious basics: food, clothing, security and boundaries.

We’ll also expect you to provide support, advice and encouragement. Foster carers provide nurturing environments where children can grow and develop.

At Bedford Borough Council, we view our foster carers as part of a professional team and we provide extensive support, ongoing training and financial support through an allowance for the child and a fee.

If you'd like to find out more about fostering, staff can answer any questions to help you decide if you’d like to start the process.
