Bedford Borough Mayoral Candidates - 2 May 2019

The election for Mayor of Bedford Borough will be on Thursday 2 May 2019, between 7am – 10pm. On the day, local government voters in the Borough have the opportunity to decide who will be their Elected Mayor and Councillor(s) for the next four years. The list of candidates for Mayor has now been officially confirmed.

Gianni Carofano - The Conservative Party

Adrian John Haynes - UK Independence Party (UKIP)

Dave Hodgson - Liberal Democrat

Jenni Jackson - Labour and Co-operative Party

Adrian Spurrell - The Green Party

Most decisions of the Council are made by the Mayor and a Cabinet chosen by the Mayor from the Borough Councillors. The Mayor and Cabinet operate within a policy framework and budget set by the Council as a whole. Councillors who aren’t in the Cabinet scrutinise the decisions of the Mayor and Cabinet, as well as fulfil their extensive community roles.

Bedford Borough Council is one of only 16 Councils in the country (outside of London) to have a Directly Elected Mayor. Mayoral elections in the UK use the Supplementary Vote (SV) system. Under SV, voters select their first and second choices from the list of candidates.

If you’re not yet registered to vote you have until the 12 April 2019 to register to have your say. If you are unable to vote at your polling station on the 2 May you have until 5pm on 15 April 2019 to request a postal vote or until 5pm on 24 April 2019 to request a proxy vote so that you don’t miss out, but please let us know as soon as possible if you wish to receive one.
