To ensure the ongoing safety of our participants, volunteers and staff at this time, litter picks including Rivercare and the Great British Spring Clean organised by Keep Britain Tidy have been postponed.

The Council's Community Volunteering Team helps residents and community groups across the Borough to organise clean ups which improve the look of local areas and increases the community spirit within an area.

We welcome clean-up requests from all members of the community, whether you a resident, parish clerk/councillor or ward councillor.

  • In 2018 we supported 108 community litter pick events
  • Volunteers collected 2,086 bags of rubbish
  • 15,791 hours of volunteering were recorded in parks and open spaces

We provide all the equipment needed for a clean up:

  • Litter pickers
  • Gloves
  • High visibility jackets
  • Bags and bag hoops
  • Health and safety forms and guidance
  • Registration forms

We also remove all the litter once collected.

Please email if you would like to book a community litter pick event in 2019/20.

Rivercare is an annual community event which gives the river and Embankment area a complete clean by having teams of local groups and members of the public litter picking in and around the river.

Anyone can take part and the more the merrier. Details on the 2020 event will follow in the New Year.

You can watch the scuba divers from Bedford Scuba Diving Club and Bedford Sub Aqua Club pull out the numerous trolleys, bicycles, traffic cones and other dumped items that get discarded in the river daily.

We have also built partnerships with The John Bunyan Boat who provide refreshments for all volunteers taking part.
