Independent Remuneration Panel for members’ allowances

Bedford Borough Council is required by law to appoint a panel of independent people to recommend how much the allowance for members of the Council should be.

We are seeking members of the public to serve on this panel. This is a voluntary position.

Panel members should be independent, objective, able to work in a team and able to analyse information effectively. As a member of the Independent Remuneration Panel, you will be provided with information and advice to help you understand the roles and responsibilities of members of the council.

You will consider evidence from a wide range of stakeholders and work together with other panel members to make recommendations to the Council.

Requirements

  • Panellists should not be connected with the Council or have any links that might affect the independence of the Independent Remuneration Panel.
  • Panel members should be available for 2 -3 meetings per year, to take place in the evening (usually at 6.30pm). Additional meetings and work will be required every four years when an in-depth review of allowances takes place. The next full review is due to commence during the autumn of 2022 and will be complete by early 2023.
  • Appointments to the panel will initially be for a period of around three to five years.
