Index of Multiple Deprivation 2019

The Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) combines 37 social, economic and environmental indicators to produce an overall deprivation score for each Lower Super Output Area (LSOA).

There are 32,844 LSOAs in England and 103 in Bedford Borough, each averaging 1,600 people.

The IMD is calculated by weighting the seven domains of deprivation, for example income has a weighting of 22.5% in the IMD, while health is 13.5% and crime is 9.3%.

The resulting scores are then ranked across the 32,844 LSOAs in England, with 1 being the most deprived area and 32,844 being the least deprived.

Particular attention is paid to those LSOAs which fall within the 0-10%, 10-20%, and 20-30% most deprived areas in England.
