Despite already achieving savings in excess of £100 million Bedford Borough Council needs to identify further savings. The impact of Covid-19 has had a major impact on the Council’s finances and resources.
The Council faces an estimated funding gap of £26.4M to 2025/26 with an immediate pressure of £21.8M in the next financial year 2021/22.
The Council’s has approved a new Transformation Programme on 28 October 2020 in order to meet the funding gap.
The new programme will focus on three key areas:
- Procurement: The Council has previously and successfully targeted areas of our procurement spend to achieve savings whilst maintaining service levels. This approach is to be continued through the new transformation programme focussing on our major areas of spend and any other residual costs.
- Service Change: We have developed a range of proposals that impact on the current service configuration or offer
- Staffing: Review of the Council’s support and administrative functions. The overall aim of this theme is to identify support type activity to ensure it is delivered by the right people, in the right place at an appropriate cost. This will also build on lessons learnt from agile working during the pandemic.
We are inviting comments on our proposals.
